Get the Look | October Rust – A Fall Grunge Makeup Tutorial pt.1 – Fall Series

It’s my favorite time of the year! All the Fall makeup trends and holiday sets are out. It’s time to whip out the vampy lips and warm smoky eyes.

Today, I’m bringing you a tutorial on how to get this 90’s inspired grungy look. If you’re familiar with 90’s metal then you noticed from the title that this look is named after the Type O Negative album October Rust, which is the soundtrack to my fall – winter as always. I can’t go without it. In fact.I’m listening to it now! I mean…

I didn’t really apply shadow to the lid itself in this look, rather focusing on the crease and just letting it blend out onto the lid. No liner, just lashes, and shadow. I wanted to create a monochromatic, rust-colored eye look that was super contoured and smoky without using any really dark shadows or liner. As per usual, I’m starting with my eyebrows done and primed eyes. I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance on my lids and Colourpop Brow Color in “Dope Taupe” and Colourpop Brow Pencil in “Dope Taupe” to build these busy brows.

Next, up, I applied a matte cream-colored eyeshadow from lid to browbone to even out my eyelid and to help with a smooth blend. I used “Entomology” from the Kat Von D Monarch Palette because that’s what I had on hand. Any matte cream will work just fine.

To start building the color up in the crease area, I took a combination of the two matte shades from the Milani Everyday Eyes Palette. You can use any warm brown shades to do this part, something with orange undertones is best for this look.

I dipped a fluffy brush into both shades and then blended them into the crease and took the color all the way up to the brow on the inner corner. I also blended it outward toward the tail of my brow. This look is all about blown out the shadow that really contours the eye.

Jumping back to the Kat Von D Monarch palette which by the way is the perfect fall palette along with the Milani one I used.

I wanted a deeper rust shade to add more depth to the crease so I took “Wraith” which is the true rust shade from the palette, it’s matte with a small amount of micro glitter which is virtually undetectable so it’s fine to the crease.

On a domed crease brush, I added in the rust shade, focusing it more into the crease and blending around the eye in a rounded shape.

Then, grabbing the Serpentina Palette from Kat Von D, I went for the “Bloodmilk” shade to bring even more depth and dimension to the eye. “Bloodmilk” is a warm matte red shade that is just stunning. When you apply it over rusts and browns it blends beautifully bringing a new element of warmth.

With the same domed crease brush, I blended “Bloodmilk” softly right into the crease, putting most the pigment at the outer portion of the crease.

I repeated the exact same process on the lower lashline focusing most the pigment on the outer corner and blending with a smudger brush.

I applied Nyx Wonder Pencil on light to the waterline to really open up the eye and because reddish colors on the waterline aren’t cute. LOL, You could also use a black or brown pencil and make it really smokey.

On the inner corner to add a bit of highlight since I used all mattes I added a touch of the light golden shimmer from the Milani Palette, and to the browbone too but lightly.
