Makeup Revolution Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit Review

Makeup RevolutionHappy Friday! For today’s post, I wanted to review the Makeup Revolution Retro luxe Matte Lip Kit. I have it for a few months now hanging out in my collection so I figured it was time to share some thoughts on it, cause I have a few.

“A little bit of retro, a little bit of luxe” Makeup Revolution says. Yeah, retro what? and very very little luxe.  I picked up this lip liner and liquid lipstick kit to try out because I love trying out new and affordable liquid lipsticks, I got the shade Echelon because it looked like a nice browny mauve toned nude. The shade is nice but the nice pretty much ends there. The only redeeming thing about this kit is the lip pencil which is fantastic so essentially I paid $9 for a lip pencil which by the way doesn’t match the liquid lipstick by any means.

The Breakdown

The packaging looks nice, but it’s plastic and really cheap feeling. I didn’t expect it to be fancy though. Just had hopes for a decent product.

Like, I said the lip liner included is great. it’s smooth, soft and pigmented. While it doesn’t match the lipstick at all, it’s a nice shade as is.

Let’s talk about this liquid lipstick. I can honestly say it is one of the worst ones I have ever tried and I have tried quite a few. Makeup Revolution claims it is long wearing and not drying. BS! Within 30 mins it was peeling, crumbling and flaking right off. It dried down yet still felt grossly tacky on the lips, like if you rubbed a glue stick on your lips. So gross. It leaves such an unflattering dry texture on the lips. It basically is everything you DON’T want in a lipstick.

The Swatches

Oddly enough swatched the liner and lipstick match in the picture below but it’s not the case.20170309_231946
As you can see, the liner on my lips is a peachy warm nude. I have gotten a fair bit of use out of this with other lipsticks so at least there is that, and it’s a nice shade.20170313_061503

Now for the liquid lipstick. Look at that texture. It’s so bad. It immediately began flaking away once it dried. BTW excuse my over lining there. LOL. I was playing around. I hate that this product was so bad because I love the color.20170313_06191920170313_061944

The Verdict

Don’t waste your $9 on this and just get one from Wet N Wild instead for less. This was by far the grossest feeling lipstick.

On a side note. I’m not sure how I even feel about this brand, to begin with. I have an eyeshadow palette from them, the Affirmation palette and a traditional matte lipstick and I enjoy them but I don’t think this brand has an original product. EVERYTHING is a copy of a high-end product, down to layout and packaging. Just seems kind of shitty so I think I am done purchasing from them. Why support a company that can’t make original quality products when there are so many other great brands that do. How are they not being sued left and right anyway?

What do you think of this lip kit? and of Makeup Revolution on a whole? Let me know below.

  1. I have a few of the older revolution lipsticks and I agree. The colours i got are really pigmented and good if you only want them on for a photo or something, but don’t last long at all. And like you said, the reason I stopped buying is because everything they do seems to be a copy which is really crappy. Great post! Xo

  2. I really like that you’re honest in this review! I just purchased this liquid lipstick and agree with you, the pencil doesn’t match – It’s too light! I love this product though, I apply a lip primer underneath, so mine doesn’t feel dry at all. I really love makeup revolution as a brand,Ii think their eye shadows are the best i have tried from the drug store – Sadly, I don’t have access to wet and wild!

  3. I had the same experience with this kit, I really liked the pencil but it was bizarre that it didn’t match the lipstick and I used the lipstick once and then threw it away!

  4. I have echelon and reign from this set and I also saw the issue with color matching between the lipstick and the liner. I didn’t have the drying/flaking issue but dear God it was tacky for ever! I found a way to get the tackiness to go away – lip balm. I put a little over the top at random one day and BAM, no more tackiness! Loved the review!

      1. I honestly had almost given up on it. I hate lip gloss for the same reason I was hating this product – the stickiness that just wouldn’t go away. The lip balm was a happy accident. 😀

  5. You’re not the only one that claims this lipstick sucks which is why I never bought it lol. You’re the first to show what it looks like on the lips though. It swatches nicely but that’s it lol. I’m sorry you wasted your money!
